Choosing monitors for main instrument displays.

Choosing monitors for MIP displays needs a bit of attention. For CPT and F/O displays (PFD, ND) I chose two wide 19″ monitors. They are slightly too big and overlap with the opening for display brightness and volume panel but I’ll squeeze it somehow.  I thought about using 17″ monitor but it is unfortunately too small to fit both display openings. Some are using 17″ with FDS MIP covers but I have a feeling that those display openings dimensions are slightly adapted to fit 17″.

Any way, I have a bigger problem with central monitor. Why, because of view angle! I made a MIP test rig and what you can’t see is that there is a problem with EWD, SD and standby instruments.

Yes, there is only half of stby speed gauge but picture visibility from first officer side is really poor (no colors and contrast) due to tilted monitor and its view angle in that direction. I advise to check view angle in all directions before purchasing LCD. Better choices are monitors with factory adjustable tilt, they tend to have a better view angle due to tilt function.
